The NUSI Stri Siksha Abhiyan is an empowering initiative by the National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI), providing education grants for the wives of seafarers.This program is designed to support the personal and professional growth of seafarers' spouses by funding opportunities for further education, skill development, and vocational training.

 

By offering financial assistance for educational pursuits, NUSI aims to enhance the self-reliance and employability of seafarers’ wives, recognizing the essential role they play in supporting seafaring families. Through this initiative, NUSI promotes gender equality, economic empowerment, and lifelong learning within the maritime community.

The NUSI Suraksha Kavach is a comprehensive life insurance scheme launched by the National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI) to provide financial security and peace of mind to Indian seafarers and their families. This initiative aims to protect seafarers from the inherent risks of the maritime profession by offering affordable life insurance coverage in the event of accidents, illness, or untimely death.

 

This insurance initiative is in partnership with the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) through the LIC Jeevan Amar policy of Rs. 25 lakhs / Rs. 50 lakhs insurance. Total yearly insurance premiums (regular premium plus additional premium depending on each case) will be paid directly by interested individual NUSI members to the LIC.

NUSI will pay the Fifty percent reimbursement of the yearly LIC Regular Insurance premium. It will benefit NUSI members upto the age of 60 years. In the event of the death of a seafarer, the insurance policy ensures that the seafarer's family receives financial assistance, providing them with essential support.

The NUSI Suraksha Kavach reflects NUSI's commitment to the welfare of Indian seafarers, offering them and their families a safety net while they serve on the high seas.

National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI) proudly represents thousands of Indian seafarers working in both Indian, foreign flagships and cruise ships. NUSI traces its origin since 1896, NUSI advocates for the rights, welfare, and working conditions of seafarers, ensuring their interests are protected through collective bargaining with employers and relevant authorities. The union plays a key role in negotiating better wages, working conditions, and ensuring compliance with maritime labor laws. It also focuses on the training and development of seafarers and addresses issues such as safety, healthcare, and social security. NUSI is affiliated with the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) and proudly represents Indian seafarers in international bodies like International Labour Organization (ILO) and International Maritime Organization (IMO).

There are many welfare benefits for seafarers and their families under the NUSI initiatives. Thousands of our seafarers and families have benefitted over the years.

For decades, NUSI has negotiated secure terms and conditions on Indian and foreign flagships. NUSI members serving on merchant ships and cruise ships can take the benefit for themselves or their family members which is at the same level for serving, retired or deceased seafarers.

NUSI wants all our seafarers to be aware so that they can get the benefits as per eligibility. All benefits are strictly as per the guidelines of applicable schemes
respectively.

“NUSI SURAKSHA KAVACH”

Life Insurance for seafarers

NUSI Salaah is a motivational counselling initiative launched by the National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI) to support the mental health and well-being of seafarers. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by seafarers—such as isolation, stress, and the pressures of long-duration assignment —NUSI Salaah provides a platform for seafarers to seek emotional support and guidance.

 

The program offers confidential counselling services to help seafarers cope with personal, professional, and psychological issues, promoting mental resilience, and enhancing overall well-being. It aims to reduce the stigma around mental health issues within the maritime community and ensures that seafarers have access to the necessary resources to manage stress, anxiety, and other mental health challenges.Through NUSI Salaah, seafarers can reach out to trained professionals for advice, therapy, and motivational sessions, fostering a healthier and more supportive environment for those working at sea.

By supporting skill acquisition, Silai Classes not only promote financial independence among seafaring families but also enhance their economic resilience. This initiative reflects NUSI's commitment to uplifting the maritime community through practical skill-building and personal empowerment.

“NUSI SAHELI SWAYAM ROZGAR YOJANA”

Self-help for women in family of seafarers

The NUSI Saheli Swayam Rozgar Yojana is a self-help initiative by the National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI) designed to empower the women in seafarers' families by promoting self-reliance and entrepreneurship. By focusing on practical skills and entrepreneurship, Saheli Swayam Rozgar Yojana aims to create economic opportunities, boost confidence, and improve the financial independence of women, fostering a stronger, more resilient community for seafaring families.

“NUSI HOLIDAY HOME LONAVALA”

For seafarers and their families

This facility offers a much-needed retreat for seafarers to unwind and spend quality time with their loved ones after long periods at sea. Designed with relaxation and bonding in mind, the resort provides a range of amenities and activities that cater to the diverse interests of family members. Whether it’s comfortable accommodations or a variety of recreational options, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. 

This facility also has a state-of-the-art indoor sports complex featuring billiards, table tennis, carom, chess, and more, all aimed at supporting the mental well-being of seafarers. The facilities at NUSI Holiday Homes and Sanatorium are also available to officers and their families, further expanding the opportunity for relaxation and recreation.

residents.This initiative highlights NUSI's commitment to honoring the contributions of seafarers by providing them with a supportive, respectful space in their later years.

“NUSI SAKSHAM”

Skill enhancement initiatives at zero cost for seafarers

The National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI) launched the Saksham Skill Enhancement Initiative to empower Indian seafarers with enhanced skills and training, ensuring they remain competitive and capable in the evolving maritime industry. The initiative focuses on providing seafarers with advanced training and certifications that meet international standards, addressing both technical and soft skills essential for modern shipping. The initiative offers specialized courses on the latest maritime technologies, regulations, and safety protocols, aiming to enhance the professional competency of Indian seafarers.

 

The initiative  offers specialized courses on Deck Rating, Engine Rating, Pumpman Skill & Lathe-Welding courses. It supports seafarers in obtaining globally recognized certifications essential for career growth and compliance with International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards.

The program encourages continuous professional development, skilling the Indian seafarer to retain his position in the global scenario and gain further ground.

Welding Certification Programs at NUSI Offshore Training Institute (NOTI) are offered with support of ISF Group, NUSI’s Academic Partners for NOTI and Mohamed Ebrahim Serang Centre (MESC) at Valsad. Lloyds Register, (LR) is the Certification Partner. The program are conducted at the brand-new facility developed at NOTI. This initiative aligns with NUSI's broader mission to improve the welfare and skill levels of Indian seafarers, making them highly sought after by global maritime employers.

The NUSI Subsidy Scheme is an initiative by the National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI) designed to provide affordable and nutritious NUSI Thali (meals) to seafarers staying in the Indian Sailors Homes Society (ISHS). “NUSI SAMVAD”

Free Wi-Fi for seafarers in hostel

NUSI Samvad is an initiative by the National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI) that provides free Wi-Fi services to seafarers staying in the Indian Sailors Home Society (ISHS). The aim is to help seafarers stay connected with their families and loved ones offering them a vital link to the outside world during their off-duty time. Seafarers in NUSI hostels can access high-speed
internet at no cost.

 

The service is designed to improve mental well-being allowing them to communicate with family members, handle personal matters, or access online services during their stay at the hostels. Seafarers can also use the Wi-Fi to access online training resources, courses, or career-related information, contributing to their professional growth. NUSI Samvad reflects NUSI’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life and welfare of Indian seafarers, providing them with a much-needed connection to home and the wider world.

A free of cost bus service for seafarers for visiting shipping company offices etc

NUSI Sawari is a free bus service initiative by the National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI), designed to assist seafarers in traveling to shipping company offices, medical centers, and other essential locations related to their professional and personal needs. This service aims to provide seafarers with convenient, cost-free transportation, easing the logistical challenges they often face.

 

By offering NUSI Sawari, the union demonstrates its commitment to supporting seafarers' welfare, ensuring they can access important services without added financial or travel burdens.

NUSI Maritime Academy GOA

NUSI Maritime Academy is a prominent maritime training institution located in Goa, India. It is affiliated with the National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI) and offers various maritime training programs aimed at preparing individuals for careers in the shipping and maritime industry. The NUSI/ ITF Trust recognising the fact that training of seafarers was totally
non-existent in India, decided to set up the NUSI Maritime Academy in 1993, with the objective of:


a) Training candidates for a career in the Merchant Navy with appropriate skills, knowledge and attitude.
b) Enhancing the knowledge, skills and attitude of the existing seafarers.
c) Developing and encouraging a spirit of mutual learning between the trainees and the trainers so as to keep all parties abreast of the latest technological advancements as well as other developments in the fast- changing world of shipping.

 

NUSI Maritime Academy is well-equipped with modern facilities, including simulators, classrooms, and workshops, to ensure hands-on training for students. It focuses on quality education, practical skills, and safety training to meet international maritime standards, such as those set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The academy also emphasizes character building and professionalism, aiming to develop well-rounded individuals who can thrive in the challenging and dynamic maritime environment. With its strong industry connections, NUSI Maritime Academy helps students secure placements with leading shipping companies worldwide.
